What Is Myopia

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. This results in blurred distance vision while near vision remains clear.

While glasses and contact lenses can correct the blur, they do not address the underlying growth of the eye. That is where myopia management comes in.

Two people are sitting on a couch inside a room, one of whom is holding a book and looking at it while the other is looking at him. They are both wearing long sleeves, and there are papers, a pen, and a glass on the table in front of them. There is a monitor on the wall, and a painting is on the left side.

Why Early Intervention Matters For Myopic Kids

Myopia typically begins in childhood and can progress rapidly during school-age years and adolescence. Higher levels of myopia are linked to increased risk of vision-threatening conditions later in life, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Myopic maculopathy
  • Early cataract development

Slowing the progression early can reduce these long-term risks and lead to more stable vision in adulthood.

Who Is a Candidate for Myopia Control

We recommend a myopia management evaluation for children or teens who:

  • Have a history of increasing nearsightedness
  • Wear glasses or contact lenses for distance
  • Have a parent with moderate to high myopia
  • Spend limited time outdoors and extended time on screens
  • Have been prescribed a stronger prescription each year

Myopia management is most effective when started early, ideally around the time of diagnosis.
