Eye Exams That Help Protect More Than Vision

Diabetes can affect your eyes long before you notice symptoms. At Hazel Family Eyecare, we provide medically focused diabetic eye exams designed to monitor, detect, and help prevent vision loss, with care that is steady, thorough, and centered on you.

Why Diabetic Eye Exams Matter

Diabetic eye disease can develop slowly, without noticeable changes to your vision. Over time, high blood sugar levels can affect the blood vessels inside the eye, leading to complications like:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Macular Edema
  • Retinal Hemorrhages
  • Increased risk of glaucoma or cataracts

Annual diabetic eye exams enable us to detect these changes early, often before you notice any symptoms, allowing us to initiate care at the right time.

What to Expect During Your Diabetic Eye Exam

A diabetic eye exam is a medically focused evaluation of your eye health, not just your glasses prescription. At Hazel Family Eyecare, this includes:

  • Optos® ultra-widefield imaging to view the retina without dilation.
  • OCT (optical coherence tomography) to detect swelling or fluid in the macula.
  • Fundus photography for detailed tracking over time.
  • Monitoring of retinal blood vessels and optic nerve health.
  • Clear communication with your primary care physician or endocrinologist.

If you’re managing diabetes, this type of exam should be part of your annual care, even if your vision feels fine.

Coordination With Your Medical Team

Dr. Tara Fowler has advanced training in ocular disease and collaborates with retina specialists and primary care providers to co-manage care. If you already have a diabetes care team, we’ll send them your eye exam findings and coordinate treatment if changes are detected.

If further care is needed, we’ll guide you through the next steps, including referral to trusted local retina specialists such as GA Retina.

Early Care, Better Outcomes

Diabetic eye disease can be managed effectively when caught early. Even if your blood sugar is well-controlled, regular yearly eye exams help us protect your vision in the long term.

If you are newly diagnosed or have gone more than a year without an eye exam, we encourage you to schedule a visit, especially if you’re experiencing:

  • Fluctuating or blurry vision
  • Spots, floaters, or light flashes
  • Eye pressure or pain
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • No symptoms, but are due for monitoring
